Don't quit that day job...

I’ve
worked at the Cayuga County Office of Tourism as
Communications Specialist since January, 2000. My
responsibilities there include managing the County’s
Visitor Information Center, and maintaining databases
and inquiry statistics. I also compile information
for the travel guide, bi-annual calendar of events,
website and other regional and state publications.
I train our volunteers and part-time staff, assist
with monthly financials and promote community events.
Basically, every work day I convince people from
outside the area to come and spend their (money)
leisure time here. And I’m proud of it!
I also provide marketing services for the City’s
Historic & Cultural Sites Commission, managing
their advertising campaign and brochure distribution,
providing brochure and website content and publicity.
Last job before this was with the Cayuga County
Chamber of Commerce. I worked part-time on special
events and fundraisers for the Chamber, specifically
“Holiday Lights,” and “Festival
of Trees,” at Emerson Park, winter 1999.
In August 1999, I held “Jesse Kline Art Camp”
for youth and teen aspiring artists. I offered rotating,
ongoing assignments including self portraits, collage,
still life, landscape, decorating my car with contact
paper, plus a project of their choice. I also taught
private art lessons, and hosted artist
openings in my backyard.
I served on the Cayuga Museum’s Board of Directors
from 1996-1997, and then took the position as Educator/Outreach
Coordinator at the Museum in 1998. Responsibilities
there included recruiting and training volunteers,
leading school and group tours, creating and hosting
special events, fundraisers and lectures, creating
an educational outreach kit, designing and creating
brochures, producing the bi-monthly newsletter,
updating the website, writing newspaper articles
and generating publicity.
Collins Communications was my first job after returning
to Auburn from graduate school, winter 1996. Working
under Starr Collins Osborne, I developed press contact
lists, wrote copy for press kits, planned and hosted
media events and secured media placements. Clients
included national artists and galleries, the Cayuga
County Office of Tourism, Relex (the Information
Technologies Division of Auburn Cablevision) and
Group Health Insurance or GHI. Highlights included
writing the press kit which lured Bon
Appetit to feature
Brook Farm and the Skaneateles Festival in a summer
issue. I was the main contact for international
publicity for Robert Colescott’s participation
in the Venice Biennale.
(The first African-America artist to represent the
US.) I also planned and hosted C-SPAN’s Alexis
de Toqueville’s tour at the Seward House on
national TV.
